Many people (or their families) were happy with their lobotomies—but the treatment was so flawed that there was no way to tell who would benefit or be permanently harmed.”

Related, here is a really good interview with Erica Anderson, at the start of which Time to Think is discussed. While I have questions about what’s really feasible to do in this Wild West moment we’re in, I found the whole interview illuminating and thoughtful. If the model Anderson describes were in place and tightly regulated, I would feel more comfortable that people seeking help were in good hands. At the moment, though, it’s hard not to see this as out of reach, with the possible exception of one or two places in the US.
