What kind of a world are we living in where there’s a ‘polite discussion’ about whether or not a 6’ 4” transwoman should be allowed to compete against women. Is this a joke? What is really going on? This is a level of mendacity and cheating unimaginable a few years ago.

And I do not think it is doing anything good for trans people. I think it is hurting trans people. How can somebody feel good about winning a race against women when they themselves have the body of a man whether or not they feel like a woman or not. It’s so pathetic to have to even state some of this but we don’t have categories based on feelings we have categories based on biological sex.

Story delivers well what it promises - puts a complex face on the topic.

I first learned about Ash in a podcast that included his father.

Thoughts.

1) Yes, I think autism can be important - and failing to identify it can lead to mis-self-diagnosis and misdiagnosis. ('But obviously you're a trans woman - what else could disliking your body hair mean?')

2) Significantly - unlike historical 'gay detransition' efforts and narratives - this character modified his LGBTQ position, identifying as "nonbinary."

3) Desisters and detransitioners are, of course, not all extra-special individuals. And selecting the most articulate or self-reflective individuals - though understandable - may result in their becoming self-conscious posterboys/girls for a point of view - mouthpieces for what readers with that pov think. I wonder, what do 'average' pathways away look like...where the movement away from a trans identity is not necessarily led by a 'break with movement attitudes'?

3) Someone showed me an article whose topic was detransitioners who broke with what was called the detransition "movement" because it was said to be anti-trans and they felt manipulated. But - I think against the author's intention - the article ended up showing that - despite rejecting being detrans spokespersons - the individuals interviewed had not returned to their earlier trans identities either - had achieved 'individual' LGBTQ identities that moved away from an earlier, simple transgender identity.
